Montreal-Area Print Provider’s Purchase Follows Recent Installation of Rho 900

BOISBRIAND, Quebec,16 January, 2012 – Imagerie DB, one of Montreal’s most dynamic print providers for high-quality fashion retail campaigns, recently acquired a five-meter Durst Rho 500R Superwide Roll-to-Roll Inkjet Printer to handle its biggest, most complex projects requiring multiple types of output. The company’s new purchase comes on the heels of the installation of a new Rho 900 Large-Format UV Inkjet Printer.

Founded by brothers Benoit and Denis Paquette, Imagerie DB is well known among Canada’s most prominent and demanding retailers. It offers clients a wide variety of solutions – from eye-level point-of-purchase pieces to vehicle and building wraps, from banners and billboards to posters and floor graphics – on virtually every media and substrate currently available. With the Rho 500R, complemented by the Rho 900, the company is enhancing its ability to offer cutting-edge digital output on time and on budget.

“Imagerie DB is respected for providing our clients with the latest, most creative and effective graphics and visual communications solutions,” Benoit Paquette said. “The Rho 500R, because of its versatility, range and quality, will help us strengthen this reputation with our clients. And it will make our operations more responsive and efficient – it is a highly efficient, highly productive machine. We fully expect that’s its operation and reliability will be as good as our Rho 900, and we have been very pleased with that printer.”

The award-winning Rho 500R prints six-color, 600-dpi images on vinyl, mesh and other superwide roll media at speeds up to 3,760 s.f./hr. It also prints three independent images from three separate job queues on three different 1.6-meter rolls all at the same time to achieve high efficiency and handle a broader range of applications. The Rho 500R operates unattended, uses less ink than comparable superwide platforms, and minimizes operational costs due to its high productivity, advanced workflow and remarkable versatility.

The 98-inch-wide Rho 900 combines efficient automated media handling and “process color additions” with high-speed printing capabilities – up to 2,400 s.f./hr. – to deliver high productivity and a broader color gamut. Its sophisticated media handling system employs an auto-feed table with belts, sheet feed gate with guides for parallel board printing and automatic two-point pin registration system to ensure accurate front-to-back registration.

“Imagerie DB is a premier creative digital printer in North America, and we’re extremely pleased to have them as a Durst customer,” said Christopher Howard, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Durst U.S. “We’re finding that, more and more, the print providers who are on top of this industry with the best solutions and the best operations are choosing Durst.”

Distinct color and texture combination selected by Facebook fans in Wrap Battle: 1080

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (January 5, 2012) – 3M Commercial Graphics announces the introduction of a stunning new color/finish combination to its 3M™ Scotchprint® Wrap Film Series 1080 – Brushed Black Metallic. The unique film color was selected in the recent Wrap Battle: 1080 contest, which asked fans of the product to vote for their favorite new color and finish on Facebook. More than 500 fans of 3M Commercial Graphics cast their votes, with Brushed Black Metallic emerging as the clear winner among the nine contenders.

“The Brushed Black Metallic film creates a very tough, aggressive look that really pops in the light,” said Shareef Khan, CEO of SS Customs, a leading custom wrap shop based in Redwood City, Calif. “I’ve used metalized films from other companies in the past, and they don’t have anywhere near as much flexibility or stretchability as Scotchprint Wrap Film Series 1080. We really appreciate the research and development that 3M puts into their films. You can see in the way that it performs, the way it adheres, and the way the air releases that 3M utilizes the most advanced technology.”

With this new addition, Scotchprint Wrap Film Series 1080 now has 34 head-turning films in carbon fiber, brushed metal, matte and high gloss. As fans of the product know, film series 1080 makes a distinctive statement, providing industry-leading features and benefits that allow users to get the look just right, each and every time.

The long-term, removable cast films offer the same great installation features found on 3M™ Controltac™ Graphic Films with Comply™ Adhesive. The product’s pressure-activated adhesive allows it to slide and be repositioned until firm pressure is applied, with non-visible air release channels that assure fast, easy, and virtually bubble-free installations. Its 60 inch width means that users can wrap almost any section of a vehicle without seams, and the film remains removable for up to three years, making it easy to change looks. The film is also backed by the industry leading 3M™ MCS™ Warranty.

Commercial Printer Sees Great Growth Potential in Point of Purchase Display Graphics

VALHALLA, NY, January 4, 2012 — Unigraphic, Inc. of Woburn, Massachusetts was seeing more demand for large format graphic point of purchase (POP) displays and found themselves at a crossroads. According to Bob Quinlan, president of Unigraphic, “We were pushing the limits of our existing large format equipment. We were handling the increasing workload, but just barely. It was beginning to cost us money in terms of limited capacity and low margins due to our cost structure. It was time to move forward, to make the right investment that would get us to that next level.”

Known for their high quality and excellent customer service, Unigraphic has been in the printing business for over 47 years providing commercial print services, digital printing and mailing services to an extensive client base of local, regional and national brands and retailers. Their large format business was largely in billboards and banners, but recently their customers were asking more and more for point of purchase display graphics.

Brian Hegan, sales manager at Unigraphic summed up the challenges Unigraphic faced. “We’ve had a steady business with many large retailers who are headquartered in New England, doing a lot of offset work, and some large format work. Then we started to see a lot more demand for high quality display graphics and POP. Our existing equipment just couldn’t keep up with the increased demand.” Hegan gave an example of a POP job for a popular retail fashion chain that required 24” x 36” and 22” x 28” posters. “That job would take 40 hours of press time and would tie up the shop for a week or more, which meant turning away other jobs.”

“We all agreed that point of purchase was the future for Unigraphic,” Bob Quinlan said, “the new jobs our customers were asking us for were POP. We were missing out on jobs because we couldn’t handle the work load or be competitive, that’s when we decided we were going to make investments in large format equipment to improve our capabilities and aggressively go after the POP business.”

Quinlan and his two brothers, Chief Operations Manager Mike and Executive Vice President Jack, started looking for a solution. “We looked at everything out there,” Bob Quinlan said, “and the Inca Onset S40 from Fujifilm just blew everyone else away, with the best quality, the highest speed and the most up-to-date technology.” The Inca Onset S40 with automation will produce 94 full-sized (63” x 123.6”) high-quality prints per hour, or 292 – 40” x 60” sheets per hour. “With the S40, those jobs that used to take a week, will take only hours to produce, and cost half as much,” Hegan said. “The Inca S40 not only gives us the capacity, it will enable us to turn jobs faster and be more competitively priced.”

Hegan also plans to expand the work Unigraphic is doing for its existing customer base. “We have one large retail client that we do all of their offset print work, but we’re not getting the large format and POP. With the S40’s print quality and speed, that’s an ideal account for us now. We can handle all of their needs.” Hegan also expects to win new business. “We’re accepting RFP’s now that we had to pass on before, and we’re able to take on more work from new accounts,” Hegan said. “Print buyers who we couldn’t help before are now asking us to provide proposals. The word is getting out about our new capabilities with the S40, and we expect we will win a lot of new business.”

Unigraphic is planning an open house to showcase their new capabilities. “A lot of printers don’t like customers in the plant, but we love it,” Hegan said. “Our plant shows very well and we’re proud of it. Buyers who come in to see what we do and how we do it often give us opportunities to quote new business.”

“This is a game changer for Unigraphic,” Bob Quinlan said. “Not many other shops will have the equipment we have in one building or the capabilities—we now have the advantage over other print providers and expect to capitalize on the opportunity.”

Announcing the new capability, Mike Sotzing, 3 Sigma Vice President of Operations, said: “This new 3 Sigma specialty coater will be our most versatile piece of equipment. With it, 3 Sigma will be able to produce more complex applications and constructions for specialty and niche markets, as well as those we now serve. When installation is complete, 3 Sigma will operate 14 coating lines. We saw significant growth in 2011 and expect another major leap forward in 2012 by virtue of this expanded capability.”

Since 1980, 3 Sigma has been a fast-growing, resourceful innovator of specialty top-coating and pressure-sensitive adhesive coated products. 3 Sigma offers expertise in solvent, emulsion, and hot melt technologies, to provide the optimum solution for any label need. Quality teams monitor and inspect material throughout the manufacturing process according to ISO 9001:2008 guidelines, to ensure that 3 Sigma customers receive the best label stock available. For additional information, log on to www.3sigma.cc, or call 937-440-3400 or 800-347-3091.

ROCHESTER, N.Y., December 8, 2011 – Edison Lithographic & Printing Corp. of North Bergen, N.J., one of the nation’s leading wide-format offset lithographers, recently has acquired a new Durst Rho 900 Large-Format UV Inkjet Printer as part of its larger plan to expand into digital UV inkjet printing. Installation of the unit is to be completed before the end of the year.

Founded in 1958 in Manhattan, Edison Litho has grown to become the only printing plant in the U.S.with three operational KBA presses, which enable the company to print on paper, board, plastic, foil and many other substrates. In 1989, Edison Litho moved from its old 12,000-square-foot facility to a new 60,000-square-foot plant in North Bergen. In 2002, the facility expanded to 80,000 square feet and now includes an in-house bindery.

The addition of the Rho 900 marks Edison Litho’s entry into production digital UV inkjet printing, and a whole new range of printing capabilities for clients whose output requirements go beyond more traditional litho printing.

“We spent months evaluating production digital printers, and the Rho 900 was the clear winner,” said George Gross, President of Edison Litho. “It will allow us to meet a wide range of customer needs while upholding our high standards of quality. The Rho 900 is a very versatile, productive and reliable addition to our roster of printing equipment.”

The 98-inch-wide Rho 900 combines more efficient automated media handling and “process color additions” with high-speed printing capabilities to deliver greater productivity and a wider color gamut. Its highly sophisticated media handling system employs an auto-feed table with belts, a sheet feed gate with guides for parallel board printing and an automatic two-point pin registration system to ensure accurate front-to-back registration.

“We’re very pleased that Edison Litho has chosen Durst for its expansion into production UV inkjet printing, and we’re proud to be associated with them” said Christopher Howard, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for DurstU.S. “It’s a good sign for Edison Litho customers – and the mark of a successful enterprise – that the company is evolving as the possibilities of print output evolve.”

Higher Quality, Lower Cost Provides the Competitive Edge for Jarob, Inc.

VALHALLA, NY, November 28, 2011 — When asked the secret of Jarob’s success, Doug VanPortfleet, chairman and CEO of Jarob, Inc. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, said, “To offer our customers better quality for less money, and to stay ahead of the competition.” Investing in the latest digital technology has enabled Jarob to fulfill that promise.

Jarob Inc. has been in business for 41 years, starting out as a fabricator of architectural signage and graphics. Jarob’s business philosophy is to invest in technology to grow the business, so they have continually invested in new digital printing equipment since 1998. Initially equipped with three roll fed solvent printers, Jarob brought in its first UV flatbed digital inkjet printer in 2005 and six months later invested in an Inca Spyder from Fujifilm. Pleased with the performance and productivity of the Inca Spyder platform, they added an Inca Columbia Turbo to further increase capacity as they continued to grow the business.

“Jarob has a very aggressive growth strategy,” said VanPortfleet. “We don’t want to be reactive, we want to be the leader. We don’t want to chase the competition, we want them to have to chase us.” So Jarob set out to find the best wide format digital inkjet printer for their business, looking at all available options in high speed, high productivity, and high quality platforms, ultimately selecting a 6-color Inca Onset S40 with automation. “We looked at everyone in the market,” said VanPortfleet, “and the Inca Onset S40 had the best productivity for the price and best cost per print. I wanted to invest in the next step up in technology and productivity and the Onset S40 simply outperformed the competition.”

“The S40 gives us the advantage in the 500 – 750 impressions range,” said Andrew Bishop, director of sales, marketing, and design at Jarob. “We now have the ability to go after jobs we may not have bid on before, or jobs where our pricing could not be competitive.”

Jarob’s plan also included bringing outsourced work back in house. They realized an immediate benefit and a boost to their ROI when they began to reclaim jobs they were outsourcing. “From a sales perspective, we were outsourcing a lot of work to screen printers. The S40 allowed us to go after more of that business and bring it back in-house. We’ve brought about 80% of the outsourced work back already,” Bishop said. The Inca Onset S40 has given Jarob a four-fold increase in capacity, faster turnaround, and more competitive pricing, and they plan to take full advantage of their new capabilities. “We plan to offer more services to our existing customers, and to gain market share,” Bishop said. “My goal is to fill the S40 up as fast as possible.”

Shortly after the Inca Onset S40 was up and running, Jarob held an open house to introduce the new machine and its capabilities to customers and employees. “It was a chance for everyone to see the samples and see the print quality,” VanPortfleet said. “Seeing it live gave it a real ‘wow’ factor.” Customers were very impressed with the speed of the machine as the automation system stacked up sample after sample. “We ran the S40 side by side with the Turbo, and it was eye opening to see how much faster the Onset prints. We explained to everyone that jobs that took a week to run on the Columbia Turbo were produced in a day on the Onset. Everyone could immediately see the impact it would have on our business.”

VanPortfleet continued, “Once we started to send out samples to prospective customers, things really picked up. There was much more interest coming in, more quotes going out, and we received many more sample requests. We are changing conventional thinking about both quality and price with the S40. The Inca Onset S40 definitely opened a door to increased business for us,” VanPortfleet said. “We let everyone in the area know about our new S40 and the spectacular work we were doing. Customers who previously said they were happy with their current supplier saw our samples and now want to talk to us.”

The investment in the Inca Onset S40 positively affected the sales team and the company’s employees. Bishop said, “Our team was very motivated by the purchase, we felt that if management was willing to make that level of investment in us, and believe in our ability to sell, we weren’t going to let them down. We’re seeing more customers this year than we have in other years combined, and we’re aggressively promoting Jarob and its new capabilities. Jarob was once a well-kept secret, but not anymore. We’re confident the S40 is going to help us grow and expand the range of customers we service.”

St. Paul, MINN. – (November 29, 2011) – 3M Commercial Graphics announces its most budget-friendly addition to its product line—3M™ Scotchcal™ Graphic Film Series IJ10 and Series IJ11. Dynamic enough for inkjet printing with UV, solvent, eco solvent and latex inks, Scotchcal graphic film series IJ10 and series IJ11 provide users with an economy solution.

The films come in 50-meter (164 foot) rolls offering users an extra 63 square feet as compared to typical 50-yard rolls. Perfect for permanent adhesive applications such as interior and exterior signage, decals and P.O.P. graphics, film series IJ10 and series IJ11 are 3.1-mil vinyl products with a clear (film IJ10) or gray-colored (film IJ11) permanent, pressure-sensitive adhesive. Available in gloss and matte finishes, the films have a heavier liner than most comparable competitor products to help the material resist buckling – even through the rigors of digital latex printing. For added versatility, film IJ10-114 is a clear product that can be used as both a digitally printable clear film and an overlaminate.

“Customers have come to know us for premium products, but we also understand their need for basic, low-cost solutions,” said Adam Larson, marketing supervisor, 3M Commercial Graphics. “Now, in addition to our premium and intermediate products, film series IJ10 and series IJ11 round out 3M’s offerings with options for even the most frugal needs. So whether customers want all the bells and whistles, or just the basics, 3M has the solution.”
