The research was conducted at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The new report enhances the understanding of the causes of sporadic failures of single-pole, high-rise sign structures that incorporate “telescoping poles.”</p>
<p><em>Fatigue Tests of Welded Connections in Cantilevered Steel Sign Structures </em>is based on tests performed at UCSD’s Charles Lee Powell Structural Systems Laboratory from 2010 to 2011. The research provides guidance in the repair or rebuilding of existing structures as well as information about improving the  safety and durability of new  structures.</p>
<p>“This research has been an important initiative for ISA on behalf of our industry and is the result of many hours of work by the ISA Mechanical and Structural Subcommittee,” said Rich Gottwald, ISA’s executive vice president. “While there have been only a handful of failures out of out of tens of thousands of sign structures, ensuring that our products are safe throughout their life-cycle is important for our industry and our customers. We believe that this report will help engineers, manufacturers, installers and end users understand the importance of regular inspections and continuing education.”</p>

<p>According to the US report, graphic imager respondents indicate that 62.5 percent purchased some sort of digital printing equipment in 2009 and 73.6 percent plan to purchase digital equipment in 2010. The most influential criteria for choosing equipment are durability (55.8 percent) and quality (53.6 percent).</p>
<p>The survey also revealed that US garment decorator respondents plan to grow their business by expanding existing markets (67.5 percent), followed by developing new markets (52.8 percent) and adding production capacity (43.4 percent).</p>

<p>The survey also asked where the future of printing is headed. Garment decorators in the US plan to utilize online design capability for customers and add more digital printing technology, while garment decorators in Canada hope to renovate existing business locations or relocate to larger areas.</p>
<p>Survey participants also indicated which problems need to be solved in the printing industry. Industrial imagers in the US want improved color matching for spot/PMS colors, while Canadian industrial imagers want to increase the speed of digital production.</p>
